In the glow of light

Members of the Schubert family still gather around these Sabbath candlesticks on Friday evenings. Sometimes they speak about the time when synagogues were set on fire in Germany. The Berlin textile merchant Martin Solomon and his wife Juliane took these candlesticks with them when they fled to Shanghai in 1939. They returned to Berlin in 1953. Their daughter Marion, who was born in exile, passed the memory of these events on to her husband, children and grandchildren.
