The BKA (Federal Criminal Police Office) only began separately recording murders of homeless, disabled, homosexual or non-German people by right-wing extremists in 1990. The federal government has documented 113 hate-crime deaths in 2020.
According to research by an editorial team from the weekly newspaper Die Zeit, among others, the figure is probably closer to 187. More victims are added each year.
But the situation is not only bleak: Hundreds of thousands have taken to the streets to demonstrate against the right.
