The Hitler Youth member Gustav Just (1921-2011) volunteered to go to the Eastern Front in 1940. While there, he participated in the mass shootings of Jews. After the war, he worked as a stone cutter, teacher and author in East Germany and became a critic of the SED dictatorship.
In 1990, he represented the Social Democratic Party (SPD) in Brandenburg’s first state parliament, but was forced to resign in 1992 when his Nazi past was disclosed.
