Naked Among Wolves (1963), an important GDR film, is based on a true story about imprisoned communists who rescued a child in Buchenwald by hiding him in the camp in 1945. The film, however, does not tell the story of the young Sinto who was deported to Auschwitz in place of the Jewish boy. The novel by Bruno Apiz, which was compulsory reading in East German schools, also overlooked this detail.
