A lifelong secret

After more than 80 years, her daughter-in-law learned the truth: Lotte Goldschmidt* (1916 -2013) was ‘half-Jewish’ in the eyes of the Nazis because her father was Jewish. This meant that her husband, who worked on the Nazis’ secret rocket programme, would not have been allowed to marry her. The couple did marry, however, in Prague in 1940, using forged documents. The couple stayed together for the rest of their lives and never revealed this truth to their children.
