On 19 February 2020, a German man stormed into various pubs in Hanau (Hesse) and shot nine people whom he believed to be foreigners. Then he shot his mother and himself. The shooting spree caused national outrage. Vigils were held in many German cities for the victims: men and women from Kurdistan, Turkey, Afghanistan, the former Yugoslavia, Bulgaria, Romania and Germany.
