Concern for the fate of German prisoners of war deeply affected postwar society. The yearning for the return of fathers, brothers, husbands and sons was even the topic of school essays. That the returning soldiers were not only war victims, but often also perpetrators who supported the Nazi regime, was rarely discussed in the media or in the classroom.
