Gerd Vanselow was still attending school when he began researching the history of the concentration camp in his hometown for a term paper in 1981 and 1982. The resistance and threats he received were so severe that he bought a blank-firing pistol. He drew courage and strength from his relationship with his grandmother. Gerd Vanselow died unexpectedly during a work trip in Zambia, Africa, in 2019.
