A nail bomb destroyed a shop in Cologne in June 2004 and injured 22 people. The National Socialist Underground (NSU) was behind the attack. The NSU consisted of two men and a woman who – along with other like-minded people – wanted foreigners to be forcibly expelled from Germany. By 2011, the the group had murdered nine people. The police did not begin to seriously investigate the right-wing terrorists until two of the perpetrators had already died.
