Neven du Mont’s TV documentary (see Station 1) was a wake-up call to parents and education policymakers in 1959: evidently, young Germans knew far too little about their country’s recent past. The documentary series The Third Reich aimed to change this. The 14 episodes were broadcast in October 1960 and enjoyed strong viewership, but the series also reaped criticism. For one, Holocaust survivors were not given a chance to speak for themselves.
