In the 1950s, over 300 Heimat films were shown in cinemas in West Germany. They presented idyllic landscapes, harmony and security and offered viewers an escape from the country’s oppressive past. The Black Forest Girl (1950) was the first German postwar film shot in colour. It was a huge success, garnering 16 million viewers.
