Rüdiger Schallock (b. 1963) was an adult when he learned about his grandfather’s past: As an SS officer in the war, his grandfather had murdered countless people in what is now Ukraine and oversaw the exhumation of tens of thousands of dead. His son – Rüdiger’s father – suffered his entire life from his father’s cold brutality. The crimes Wolfgang Schallock committed under the Nazis were never discussed. His grandson did research and published his findings.
