Protest with consequences

The trial took nearly six years to conclude. There were frequent protests in response to the excuses offered by defendants, the humiliating manner in which survivors were questioned and the openly right-wing defence lawyers. Half of the concentration camp personnel were acquitted, and five others received prison sentences of less than ten years. Despite the lenient sentences, this high-profile trial led to a shift in how German society confronted its Nazi past.
