Following the broadcast of Holocaust (1979), tens of thousands of people, including survivors and witnesses of Nazi crimes, contacted the ARD broadcaster. In letters and phone calls, they expressed consternation, guilt and shame, but also disapproval and bewilderment. One journalist, who answered phones at WDR for many hours, described his job as ‘contemporary history telephone counselling.’
