The omnipresent past


Boys continued to wear their Hitler Youth uniforms, which often were their only clothes.

The occupying powers passed a decree demanding that all Nazi symbols be removed from buildings and destroyed.

The symbolic ‘cleansing’  was not, however, the end of the story.

Anyone between the ages of ten and thirteen in 1945 knew only National Socialism and had been deeply influenced by it.
