He wielded a great deal of power in West German politics from 1953 to 1963: Hans Globke (1898 -1973) was Konrad Adenauer’s ‘right-hand man’ – in the truest sense of the word.
Globke, who had been a top official in the Nazi apparatus, let many former Nazis return to positions in government ministries and the secret service. In Nazi Germany, he had supported the persecution of Jews and promoted anti-Semitic racial laws. He was never punished for these acts.
