The ‘Zero Hour’


In the summer of 1945, countless children and adolescents roamed alone through a world of ruins, like the boy in this illustration. Although Germany had surrendered, few felt a lasting contentment with the peace. The devastated cities, the widespread grief over the many dead relatives, the paralysis and humiliation caused by the lost war were too much to bear. Many Germans felt defeated rather than liberated.
