When Rost returned to Dachau for the first time in 1955, he was horrified to find that there were no reminders of the Nazi crimes perpetrated there. He asked: ‘Do these new men really think that they can simply erase the traces? The tragic legacy of each of these barracks remains, and the cries of pain from the dying still ring in the visitor’s ears.’
