Turning a concentration camp into a housing camp

After being liberated by the US army in late April 1945, the former Dachau concentration camp was used to intern suspected war criminals. Beginning in 1948, refugees and displaced persons were housed in the camp buildings. Over time, the fences, walls and watchtowers were removed. Following a proposal initiated by survivors, the site eventually was converted into a memorial in 1965.
